ASTROLOGY:
PSEUDO-SCIENCE OR SCIENCE OR DIVINE SCIENCE? – A MYTH
BUSTER
It has often
been propagated by some scientists and rationalists that astrology is not a
science. Some others say it to be a pseudo-science. Even sometimes, they have
been found making mockery of it and its findings. They might be having their
own specific arguments to prove it. In today’s world, everybody has a right to
disagree. We do honor their spirit of disagreement. But one has no right to
make mockery of any discipline, especially astrology which is said to be one
extremely important branch (Vedanga) out of 6 vedangas having been originated
from our sacred Vedas. My own scientific background does not allow me to accept
the so-called rationalists’ above theory which is undoubtedly prejudiced and malicious.
In fact,
science is defined as the systematic or methodical study of part of the
physical world. In Hindi, science is said to be विज्ञान (वि+ज्ञान = विशिष्टीकृत ज्ञान) यानी प्रकृति के क्रमबद्ध व
सुव्यवस्थित ज्ञान को विज्ञान कहते हैं। We know that various tests, experiments
and research works are continuously carried out in science. The same is
happening in other branches of disciplines including astrology. Very often, the
old discoveries in science are found to be obsolete or inaccurate and they are
replaced by the new ones. The same is continuously happening in astrology too.
There is ample scope for research and experiments in all the astrological
branches, whether it be Vedic or KP or Jaimini astrology. In astrology too, we
often come across new findings through our painstaking studies, research and
experimental works and the old findings are undoubtedly replaced by the new
ones. Keeping the above facts in view, how can one say that astrology is not a
science at all or if it is a science, it is a pseudo-science.
Friends, even in science and
mathematics, we have to resort to numerous postulates for carrying out or
pursuing any scientific and mathematical study or research work. These
postulates are nothing but self-proven axioms which means that there is no
logical proof available to the effect that how these postulates have come out
in existence. But, we, in science accept them to be true and also make them
bases for so many our sequential studies and calculations. But an
astrologer does not criticize science or scientists for this kind of various
shortcomings abundantly available in all branches of science. So, why others,
especially scientists and rationalists should involve themselves in this kind
of malicious blame game in order to prove superiority of Science over Astrology
or other disciplines?
It is a universal fact that in astronomy,
we adopt solar-centric system of calculations but in astrology, we adopt
geocentric system of calculations. The solid reason behind it is that we
as observers are present in the earth instead of in the Sun. For this very
reason, we take Sun as a planet instead of as a star. Through our
astronomical knowledge, we all know that the earth like other planets revolves
round the sun from west to east direction along with earth’s rotational motion
around its own axis. We know that Sun is stationary and does not revolve around
the earth. But, for astrological purposes, the path of earth is taken as
path of Sun. This path is known as ecliptic. Similarly, Moon being earth’s
satellite revolves around the earth but it is also taken as one of the planets.
The points where the orbits of Earth and Moon intersect each other are said
to be ascending node (Rahu) and descending node (Ketu) respectively. Rahu
and Ketu are merely mathematically calculated points and these both planets are
said to be shadowy planets but they have got dominating influence over other
planets in the astrological phenomena.
The other planets of the Solar system
viz., Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are also
taken into consideration in astrology as planets. Keeping the distance of
the planets and satellites from the sun in view, for the astrological
purposes, Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus are treated as inner planets and
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are considered as outer
planets. The astrological prediction is mainly based on scientific
phenomena such as force of gravitation, geomagnetic & solar radiation,
force of attraction or repulsion, etc.
At the time of birth of a child or at
the time of beginning of any event, whatever planetary and stellar position
(position of heavenly bodies) is found in the heaven, the same is mapped out or
fixed out as a horoscope for predictive purposes. However, while making
predictions, transitory positions of all these celestial bodies is also taken
into consideration.
The formulae, parameters, calculations,
etc. determined by our learned sages in Vedas, Shastra, Puranas, Brihad
Parashar Horashastra, Astrological Classics, Jaimini Shastra, Krishnamurthi
paddhati (KP system) etc., have been found to be remarkably accurate when used
in composite way instead of in isolation. All the learned sages and astrologers
have left ample scope for the continuous research and experimental works in the
successively changing environment so that the accurate predictions might be
made in accordance with DESH, KAAL, PAATRA (देश, काल, पात्र).
Friends, I think that my above humble
submission shows that Astrology is a science in all aspects. So, now whether
astrology is a science or not, is a non-debatable topic over which we should
not waste our precious time. Today millions of professionals associated with
purely scientific background are studying astrology and doing painstaking
research work in India and abroad and thus, contributing immensely in this
field of astrology.
Thus, I claim with all humility
that astrology is a divine science because its scope or purview involves
scientific and rationalistic study of position and movement of heavenly bodies
which are capable to unfold the mysteries and secrets of all the animate and
inanimate objects of the universe.
