 Know Your Birth Lagna and Birth Rashi

 

Lagna: At the time of birth of a child or a native, the sign which rises in the east is called Lagna of that native. For Example, at the time of birth of a native, if out of 12 Signs or Rashis, one Sign – Aries (Suppose) rises in the east, Aries is said to be Lagna of that native. In North Indian style of Horoscope, the first house at the top is said to be Lagna. In this case, native will be said to have Aries Lagna.

Note 1: In North Indian style horoscope, houses are fixed but signs change. In South Indian style horoscope, signs are fixed but houses change.

Rashi:
At native’s birth time, sign occupied by Moon is called Moon Sign or birth Rashi or Janma Rashi or Rashi. If suppose we take the above example of Aries lagna and Moon is posited in Aries sign, native’s birth Rashi or Janma Rashi will be Aries along with Aries lagna. It means that birth lagna and birth rashi both will be Aries. But if Moon occupies some other sign, suppose Taurus at the time of birth, Moon sign or Rashi will be Taurus though Lagna will be Aries.

Here, 1 stands for Aries; 2 for Taurus; 3 for Gemini; 4 for Cancer; 5 for Leo; 6 for Virgo; 7 for Libra; 8 for Scorpio; 9 for Sagittarius; 10 for Capricorn; 11 for Aquarius; 12 for Pisces.

Out of the above 12 signs whichever sign rises in the east at native’s birth time, that sign will appear in the very first house.

Suppose Taurus sign rises in the east, number 2 will replace 1 and lagna will be Taurus and so on.

Similarly, position of Moon in a sign at birth’s time tells about Moon Sign or Janma Rashi. As mentioned in the previous para, if Lagna is Taurus and Moon is in Capricorn sign, Janma Rashi will be said to be Capricorn (मकर).

Thus, one can know about one’s Janma Lagna and Janma Rashi by observing their horoscope or birth chart. People often don’t know the difference between these two terms. So, the above discussion has been put up for the purpose of clarity in that aspect.
